first_img…escape with cash, gunArmed bandits pounced on a Corentyne, Berbice couple, beating and terrorising them, before carting off millions in cash and jewellery, along with the rice farmer’s licensed firearm.The incident occurred at Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Reports are at about 18:45h on Friday evening, two armed masked men scaled a side fence of the Lot 15 Section B Number 65 Village house, where 66-year-old Thirbenny Ramnauth, called “Reds”; and his 62-year-old wife, Chandrawatti Ramnauth, were seated on the veranda.The bandits then dragged the couple inside the house where they began to beat the businessman as they demanded valuables.Thirbenny Ramnauth said he was beaten by both men with their guns as they demanded cash and jewellery.The men then proceeded to bind the couple’s hand with duct tape. Thirbenny Ramnauth was ordered to lie face down on the floor while the men proceeded to take his wife in the upper flat of the house in search of cash and jewellery.The scared woman said she complied and handed over $300,000; US$2575; a large quantity of gold jewellery; one Apple iPhone; two Samsung cellphones; three bottles of whiskey; and the farmer’s 12-guage shotgun, along with 25 live 12-gauge cartridges. The men then returned to the lower flat of the house where one of them placed his gun in Chandrawatti Ramnauth’s mouth, threatening to shoot her.While the ordeal was ongoing, neighbours reportedly heard the woman screaming but no one called the Police.Guyana Times was told that a lorry driver, who was passing at the exact time the men were jumping into the yard, proceeded to the Police outpost one village away and reported what he saw.However, the Police arrived on the scene after the bandits had already escaped. An investigation has been launched.last_img
