SCULPTURE IN HONOUR OF 91 LETTERKENNY MEN KILLED IN WW1 TO BE UNVEILED

first_imgThe Letterkenny Community Heritage Group will unveil a sculpture on the Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at the Cathedral Square to the ninety one men from the Letterkenny area who were killed in WW1.Redmond Herrity who made the sculpture.The sculpture is a work of art by local man Redmond Herrity who himself has a keen interest in the subject and has volunteered his time to the project.Redmond’s Great Grandfather Barney Sweeney fought in the war. The sculpture will be unveiled by Donegal WW1 historian Paddy Harte and local man Johnny Keys from Sentry Hill who lost three Granduncles in the conflict, while a fourth brother was sent home a story similar to that of the Movie “Saving Pte Ryan” .All of the soldiers killed are interred in foreign countries and include the youngest man Albert Mills Knipe, age 17 from Main St and the oldest Jermiah McDaid 46 came from Crieve.The men are buried in France, Belgium, Turkey and what we call today the Middle East.A speech on the war and its effects locally will be delivered by former Army Commandant and military Historian Declan O’Carroll while a list of the men’s names to date will be read out by Kieran Kelly.Brian Walsh formerly of Mount Southwell Place will perform MC for the evening.L.C.H.G. would like to thank all of those who have helped and assisted in the project including the local Churches and former Town Council.
