Arsenal 1-0 Besiktas (1-0 agg): Sanchez fires Gunners into Champions League

first_imgArsenal’s star summer signing Alexis Sanchez justified, and may well have paid off, his £35million price tag after scoring the goal that sealed the Gunners’ qualification to their 17th consecutive Champions League campaign. The former Barcelona forward’s strike on the stroke of half-time sealed a 1-0 aggregate win over Turkish side Besiktas at the Emirates Stadium, as the north London side creep into Thursday’s group stage draw by the slimmest of margins. It was a tense contest between the teams, one which it descended into farce in the second-half thanks to Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca, who reduced Arsenal to ten men after showing Mathieu Debuchy a harsh second yellow and then booked substitute Calum Chambers for coming onto the field too early supposedly without his permission. And after a frantic finale, where former Chelsea striker Demba Ba more than once went close to a match-winning away goal for the visitors, the Gunners managed to hold on to ensure there will be four Premier League representatives in this year’s competition.Having barely escaped with a 0-0 draw in the away leg in Turkey, on what was admittedly a horrendous playing surface, Arsene Wenger’s men were more themselves on their snooker table-esque home turf. The hosts also coped well without the absent Aaron Ramsey, after the dynamic Welshman’s sending off in Istanbul ruled him out of the return leg, with Jack Wilshere stepping up with a bustling performance. And, after a bright start from Arsenal, the England midfielder should have given his side an early lead after breaking through of Besiktas’ back-four, but he could only slide his effort wide of the post, while Santi Cazorla also failed to find the target with a chipped effort from a good position.Arsene Wenger’s men were well on top in the early stages, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proving a constant threat on the right wing, but they had to remain vigilant as the visitors were a real danger on the break.Besiktas did improve as the match went on but failed to really create any chances in the first-half, and while the Gunners were quick to charge on their opponents’ box when they stole possession, they lacked composure in the final third and were easily broken down. The visitors failed to land a shot on target in the first 45, and in fact the entire game, but they were screaming for a penalty after Ramon Motta, who looked certain to score after good wing play from Olcay Sahan, was felled in the box by Wilshere before he could pull the trigger. The referee waved play on, though, with replays showing the midfielder timed his lunging tackle from behind to perfection. The nerves began to creep in as the game approached the break still goalless, with both sides despirate to land the first blow, and there was finally some relief for Wenger, his side and the visiting Emirates faithful as the Gunners finally forced a breakthrough seconds before the whistle.Wilshere was again involved as he and Mesut Ozil exchanged a series of passes on the edge of the box before sending Sanchez clear, with the Chilean forward coolly slotting home for a perfectly timed first Arsenal goal. And Sanchez, playing as a lone striker in the absence of injured frontman Olivier Giroud, really should have doubled his tally and Arsenal’s lead shortly after the restart, but fired narrowly wide from close-range after being brilliantly found by a disguised dinked pass from Wilshere.Oxlade-Chamberlain and Debuchy were next to go close to increasing the deficit, the winger’s shot blocked and the defender seeing his header from a corner shake the side netting, and they were almost made to pay for their missed opportunities when Ba found the ball in the box moments later but he, too, found the wrong side of the net.A nervy final 20 minutes were made worst for Arsenal after Debuchy’s sending off, the Frenchman dealt a second booking despite appearing to win the ball with a stretched tackle, as Besiktas pushed for the vital away goal that would break the hosts’ hearts. It was Ba, again, who could have sealed it but the Gunners managed to survive, the Senegal international failing to get a touch to send the ball towards goal after a deep cross has evaded everyone in the box.Arsenal also had their chances in the final moments as they nobly refused to park the bus, but their counter-attacks again broke down after both Ozil and Sanchez dallied in possession. It meant little in the end, though, as the Premier League side prepare for yet another season in Europe’s premier competition.
